Thanks for uploading File:President Harding and Calvin Coolidge.webm. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{self|cc-zero}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Hi! Thanks for making the edits on File:Devout, Yemen (9849350914).jpg. I've fixed the cross links between it and the new File:Devout, Yemen (9849350914) (deJPG).jpg. Please take a look at both and you'll see how to link different versions of files. Also the new version was not uploaded from Flickr, so that tag shouldn't be on it. Instead use the source link to the original file here on Commons. --Cart (talk) 12:28, 17 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

JPG & TIF

[edit]

JPG and TIF versions of the same files (fairly common for LOC and other older US Gov works) are not generally considered "duplicates" to be deleted; they should be linked to each other as "other version" field. Cheers, -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 18:10, 1 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Infrogmation, ordinarily I'd be inclined to agree, but File:ColoredSailersRoomWWINOLA.jpg is far lower-resolution. NARA provides full-resolution JPEGs, but this is simply a needlessly scaled-down version. JayCubby (talk) 18:13, 1 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
Also, note that LOC has been gradually uploading more and higher res versions of old photos to their website. Versions uploaded more than a decade ago were often the highest res publicly available at the time uploaded. If better versions are now available and the old version is in use, overwriting with higher res of same is often a good solution. Cheers, -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 18:16, 1 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

Emmett Till

[edit]

@JayCubby - According to the Commons description, the photo below of Emmett Till's parents was "named by Time magazine in 2016 as one of the 100 most influential photos of all time." Is it possible and worth you restoring and submitting for FP? (I don't have the tools/skills to restore.) - ERcheck (talk) 05:59, 3 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

@ERcheck, the highest-resolution version I could find is this. Your thoughts? The image you suggested doesn't really need restoration, too. JayCubby (talk) 17:25, 3 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
I'm not sure what needs to be done. Any corrections/enhancements? I don't know that the quality is sufficient for FP (I'm relatively new to the FP process), but it is truly historical. - ERcheck (talk) 19:43, 3 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hello @JayCubby

Perhaps you've sometimes wondered why I reject the requests. The images are mostly from a time when there were no better versions of them, like the Gandhi image from just now. Such images shouldn't be deleted on Commons, but rather tagged with "other version." Nevertheless, I think your version is better; I'd be happy to replace it in the different language versions for you. Regards: זיו「Ziv」For love letters and other notes 17:36, 7 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

@A.Savin, would you say that you are involved in the dispute? JayCubby (talk) 20:49, 27 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
How do you mean that involved? As said, some of the RfD's were justified, while some others were not. But the fact that you were targeting Andy is obvious, because, otherwise you surely would have nominated images with more care and there were no nonsensical rquests like this one --A.Savin 20:56, 27 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
@A.Savin, I would not call that nonsensical. My nominations may not have been perfect in all cases, but that is no reason for a block. If you look in my deletion request history, I have a slightly different view, which I'm working to correct, of what is considered DM. I have never been sanctioned for deletion request that fails, because there is at least valid reasoning behind each one.
By involved,
"I myself am being stalked by 1989 and Christian Ferrer, so I know very well what it is about"
Is the relevant quote. You are actively involved in a dispute which you consider similar, and may not be in a place to assess potentially similar cases.
yes, I was targeting andy. I was doing so in the sense that I was going over his uploads. I was not stalking him, nor was I intending to harass it. JayCubby (talk) 21:07, 27 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
It means then, my "involvement" is limited to the fact that I know how it feels if someone is monitoring your edits in order to do something against you, while most other admins actually don't know what it is (and as a result, we have what we have). So I think with 3 days it's a very mild sanction and I have chosen that deliberately, given the fact that some RfD's are ~in order --A.Savin 21:33, 27 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
@A.Savin, your involvement is more than past experience. You have made extensive, and are currently making them, in a thread pertaining to stalking.
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Administrators%27_noticeboard/User_problems#c-A.Savin-20250726092800-User:1989
considering that a user has already complained about my block, and that there have been substantial complaints about your previous actions, to the point where there's a UCOC case, are all good signs that this block should not have been made at all. JayCubby (talk) 22:58, 27 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

This blocked user asked to be unblocked, but one or more administrators has reviewed and declined this request. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked. Other administrators can also review this block, but should not override the decision without discussion.

Request reason: "the blocking administrator is involved in a superficially similar dispute, resulting in effectively an involved block. Decline reason: "You correctly said: "Making reasonable deletion requests is not a blockable offense". As big part of you DR-s were not reasonable, I consider short block acceptable to avoid disruption. Taivo (talk) 15:32, 28 July 2025 (UTC)"Reply

Adding context to an LOC image

You can add context to LOC images at the LOC page at Flickr Commons. They would add 50 images each Friday from the Bain Collection, but a new guy is in charge and they add images less frequently and concentrating on later images. https://www.flickr.com/photos/library_of_congress/albums/72157603624867509/page283 RAN (talk) 03:22, 17 October 2025 (UTC)Reply

File:Sp_illum_10deg_2025_1080p30.webm

[edit]

Thanks for uploading a new version of File:Sp_illum_10deg_2025_1080p30.webm. However, by setting the framerate to 30 fps, it no longer progresses at 1 day of simulation per second of animation. Can you please set the framerate to 12 FPS (the resulting video should be around 6m08s) but use the AV1 codec instead of VP9? Thanks, cmɢʟee ⋅τaʟκ 21:09, 5 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Cmglee, ✓ Done. The command I used was -i spillum10deg20261080p30.mp4 -c:v libaom-av1 -crf 30 -b:v 0 -cpu-used 4 -filter:v setpts=(30/12)*PTS -c:a copy spillum10deg20261080p30_12fps.webm.
To overwrite the file, I used User:Rillke/bigChunkedUpload.js. I can upload files upto 5gb with it. Cheers! JayCubby (talk) 01:33, 6 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
Looks great, thanks. I'd used
ffmpeg -y -i sp_illum_10deg_2025_1080p30.mp4 -vf "setpts=2.5*PTS" -r 12 -c:v libvpx-vp9 -crf 37 sp_illum_10deg_2025_1080p30.webm
but when I replaced libvpx-vp9 with libaom-av1 in the command above, I got Overriding packet duration by frame rate, this should not happen errors.
Glad to know bigChunkedUpload.js lets one upload files larger than 100 MB. Thanks, cmɢʟee ⋅τaʟκ 02:11, 6 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

Overwriting files

[edit]

Hello @JayCubby

Please make yourself more familiar with COM:OW. Old files like File:In The Barley Harvest.jpg, File:Ingrid bergman.jpg, File:Impetuous Charge of the First Colored Rebel Regiment (November 5, 1864), by Frank Bellew.jpg, File:General Humphrey charging Alfred Waud.jpg, and File:Confederate cavalry 1st virginia bw.jpg (and maybe more??) should not be overwritten with newer versions that differ significantly from the previous image. Please upload such files as new versions and tag the old ones with the new versions under "other versions." If you need help replacing files in language versions with your better ones, I'd be happy to assist. Best regards, זיו「Ziv」For love letters and other notes 20:23, 6 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

Same for here please File:Nixon Contact Sheet WHPO-E0416 Colin Powell.jpg. Btw, they are all good images. זיו「Ziv」For love letters and other notes 20:40, 6 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
and here File:Capture of a Arab slave dhow by H. M. S. 'Penguin' off the Gulf of Aden - ILN 1867.jpg, thanks. זיו「Ziv」For love letters and other notes 20:46, 6 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
One more thing, but this is just my personal opinion. You're welcome to use the "Category:Files by JayCubby" for files where you were the original uploader, but for files that weren't originally uploaded by you and to which you've only made improvements, I find this category rather strange, even annoying, because it gives a false impression. This doesn't mean your improvements aren't appreciated. In my opinion, you should split the category into Category:Files uploaded by JayCubby and Category:Files improved by JayCubby and have the existing category deleted. Best regards, זיו「Ziv」For love letters and other notes 07:34, 7 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
Addendum: Files by JayCubby don't need to be deleted, of course; if you follow my suggestion, I could simply rename the category for you and you just have to create the other one. זיו「Ziv」For love letters and other notes 07:38, 7 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Ziv, I won't contest every overwrite, but, in many cases the Library of Congress publishes higher-res versions of photos. The scanner at File:Confederate_cavalry_1st_virginia_bw.jpg was probably top-of-the-line in the nineties. I've begun to split off files. JayCubby (talk) 15:10, 7 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
Hello JayCubby. Of course they do that, but such changes should ideally be made as a new file. This way you're on the safe side, which no one will dispute, and the old version remains available on Commons, even if the file is subsequently replaced in the language versions. Thank you for your efforts. Look at it this way: your "Files uploaded by JayCubby" category would then contain more files. זיו「Ziv」For love letters and other notes 16:03, 7 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

Medal of Honor
Grand Army of the Republic medal
Looking at the picture of the Civil War veteran, the "medal" is not just any medal but the Medal of Honor.
That suggests he is one of 1522 individuals: en:List of American Civil War Medal of Honor recipients. That list would be reduced to those who survived to at least 1914.
Glrx (talk) 19:02, 2 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Glrx, this is extremely helpful. I think it could be one of three people, within Pennsylvania at least:
David Lafayette Smith
Joel H. Lyman
Lewis A. Rounds
I can't find GAR records sorted by death date, but I'll continue to poke around. Any source suggestions would be helpful.
Thank you! JayCubby (talk) 19:39, 2 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
The soldier's cap should tell us more, but I do not know how to interpret it. Looks like a 2 and an 18 or 181.... It may identify a regiment. Glrx (talk) 20:09, 2 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Glrx, I am fairly sure it's Patrick DeLacey! (FindAGrave) [far left]. JayCubby (talk) 22:37, 2 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Glrx, the LoC got back to me:

Thank you for suggesting this update to our catalog record. I and a few other people took a look and while there is definitely a similarity between the man in our photo and Patrick DeLacey we don't believe they are the same man. The first reason is the man in our photo has a hat with the number 218. A veteran's hat number could correspond with the unit he was in or with the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) Post he was a member of after the war. Patrick DeLacey was in the 143rd PA Infantry and the GAR did not have a 218th Post in Pennsylvania.

The man in our photo is not wearing a Medal of Honor, he's wearing the GAR medal, which looked very similar. A photo of both medals side by side can be found at https://npsgnmp.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/moh-and-gar-medals.jpg. We also think there's enough difference in the faces, especially since some of the photos of DeLacey online appear to have been taken only a few years before ours would have been.

Let us know if you have any other potential identifications. Ideally we would like all of our photos identified, but we don't want to put an incorrect identification on our catalog since our photos are used in many books and web pages.

JayCubby (talk) 22:24, 21 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for following up on this topic. I'm sorry I misidentified the medal, but I'm also surprised that they look so similar. Glrx (talk) 00:26, 22 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

I apologize if I'm sometimes a bit impersonal. I appreciate your attention and efforts. I look forward to your company. Lmbuga (talk) 02:44, 30 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

My words in Galician (or in Spanish, since Galician is similar to Spanish, but more so to Portuguese) were emotional. Very emotional. The English translation removes that emotion.--Lmbuga (talk) 02:49, 30 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
FYI @Lmbuga, I wouldn't say you are being impersonal. Cheers! JayCubby (talk) 02:51, 30 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

Aldrich Ames photo

[edit]

File:Ames yearbook58 cropped.jpg - what exactly are you trying to do here? It's your responsibility when you edit an image, especially an image you didn't upload originally, to explain what is going on. Your edit summary was the supremely unhelpful "c:User:Rillke/bigChunkedUpload.js: fft", and your picture looks identical except it's larger. If you can't be bothered to collaborate, that's fine, but then don't edit other photos. Since you are insisting on this with edit summaryless reverts - what, exactly, did you change here and why do you think your picture is better? Information that could have been in your original upload summary? SnowFire (talk) 07:49, 10 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

@SnowFire, see my last revert summary: "Reverted to version as of 01:49, 7 January 2026 (UTC) SnowFire, FFT means w:Fast Fourier Transform, which removed halftone artifacts :)".Reply

Perhaps there is a caching issue preventing the latest revision from showing up? JayCubby (talk) 16:50, 10 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
On your second edit summary: Huh, my apologies. I did see your revert but the explanation was after the undo text and apparently my eyes treated it as a runon with the automatic text. I do think your first edit summary could have been more descriptive, but the second one was my bad.
That said, I still don't really see an improvement here. To be clear I could see that the image was different, just not meaningfully different or better. I'll leave it be but while I can see some subtle shading differences, it's not clearly "better" to my eyes, and the image size has increased. SnowFire (talk) 08:20, 12 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

File:Indian Mutiny Map Showing Position of Troops on 1st May 1857.jpg

[edit]

Hello, the upload you made for File:Indian Mutiny Map Showing Position of Troops on 1st May 1857.jpg isn't quite the same map, it is missing several regional and country names. Hohum (talk) 22:02, 15 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Hohum, good catch, reverted. I compared the two images prior to upload, but apparently not deeply enough (the region I checked was identical). JayCubby (talk) 16:40, 16 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Thanks for buying and uploading this. I think you should also scan the back, and upload it. Here is the XCF: File:Bob Dylan 1963 promo photo by Don Hunstein.xcf. Best, Yann (talk) 14:44, 3 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Sorry to ping you twice. In case I can't get the XCF to work (Photoshop is picky and conversion is unreliable), could you export as TIFF or PNG with no contrast adjustments (or better yet, could you export as a PSD)? A file host like https://litterbox.catbox.moe/ works well for large Commons incompatible files. JayCubby (talk) 14:58, 3 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
